To Market - Wittenbergplatz Market

I have been looking for a market for a month now. I am becoming familiar with the many fruit and vegetable stands on the outside of Turkish supermarkets but I wanted German products, preferably grown close to Berlin. You know the spiel, seasonal, local - all those virtuous words. It’s August, so now is the time to buy seasonal. I found a great website called Hungry in Berlin, that sadly seems defunct since their last post was in December 2009, that makes reference to this market.

It’s across from the KaDeWe, so I know that this market is aimed at tourists and moneyed folks who think nothing of spending 20 Euros for some bread and cheese.  I have to start somewhere though and today little L woke up at 5 a.m. had a half an hour singing / whining session and then settled back to sleep.  I was thoroughly awake after her performance so I thought I would make the best of the day by starting really early.  I got to the market at 7:45 a.m.   It took until almost 9 a.m. for the merchants to unpack their wares - so don’t go early!

Borough market it’s not.  Winterbergplatz market is charming and petite.  It has a handful of vegetable stalls, a fish stall, a wild meat stall, two flower stands, a couple of cheese stands, an organic bakery and one that sells some delicious looking sourdough, a lady that sells mushrooms and the quirky lady in red pictured above selling natural juices.  I would have bought a bag of sand from her if that is what she was selling,  She just had this way about her - thoroughly enchanting.  As it happens, her fruit juices are extremely tasty, little L and I have already made good progress on the apple and sour cherry one.

I bought a punnet of tiny blueberries, tomatoes, cucumbers, some lovely firm beetroot, fresh juice from Dr. Neubert and a small pumpkin (some recipes to follow with those ingredients soon!)
