Bobo Q, Bubble Tea, Charlottenburg

I first tried Bubble Tea in Vietnam and Thailand, 10 years ago.  It was all the rage, everyone was slurping them up through fat straws.  Upon my return to London I was surprised to find that this drink was readily available in China town.

To me the appeal of bubble tea is it’s inherently funny.  I can’t imagine being upset and drinking bubble tea.  It’s a bit like trying to be angry and then getting the hiccups, it doesn’t work because it’s all too comic.  There you are, sipping a milky taro tea through a fat straw and then bloop, a tapioca ball.  Bloop, bloop, bloop!  3 more.

Imagine my surprise when I saw colourful bubble tea pictures in the window of Bobo Q.  I asked the girl behind the counter how long Bobo Q had been around?
“1 year.”
“Really?!  And do people around here ‘get’ bubble tea?”  I asked.
“They’re starting to…”

Hmm… Always good to hear that peoples minds are expanding and accepting new things.

I ordered a Taro flavoured drink and a mango green tea for my husband. The drink, ice and tapioca are put into a plastic shaker and clipped into a machine that does its thing. The cup is then sealed and handed over with a pointy ended fat straw. You give the plastic a stress releasing stab and let the fun begin.

If you are put off by strange textures, this one is certainly not for you. And whatever you do, don’t imagine eyeballs.

    Hi there,

If you like bubble tea and you live in London, then you must try Chaboba Bubble Tea in Camden Lock.
All their ingredients and marchineries are from Taiwan plus the teas and bobas are freshly made on site each day. It’s the best I have tried in London so far. Their popping bobas are also a treat! Check them out! x

You are right @Daisydoo. Boobuk bubble tea is probably the real bubble tea in Berlin. I wonder why the website http://www.boobuk.com is only in German? Personally I buy my bubbletea at boobuk. The address is Kanstrasse 118,1062 Berlin. Try it out by yourself…..

Check out a brand new Bubble Tea bar in Neukölln: it’s called And Dots, on the Weserstraße 7, it’s stylish, the music is good and the drinks fantastic. Open during the afternoon and evening. Have fun, cheers.
