Frische Paradies, Gourmet Food, Prenzlauer Berg

I was remarking to a friend the other day, that although the restaurants in Berlin can be rather hit and miss, the food shops are fantastic, diverse and considerable for such a small population.

I am a self-confessed addict of Mitte Meer, the no frill cash and carry just up the street from me.  But I had wanted to visit Frische Paradies for some time at the recommendation of a serious foodie friend of mine. After 3 days of living it up (culinary speaking) in London, I was ready for a little pick me up.

Upon setting eyes on the large structure, with wrap around tinted windows I knew I was in for a treat.  Inside it was like the Louis Vuitton of supermarkets.  Black and gold, with exclusive food wares like Agar Agar from Albert & Ferran Adria and a large array of Callebaut and Valrhona chocolates in catering formats, i.e. bags of 3kg in either chips or Valrhona ‘beans’.  There was even a refrigerated shelf of edible flowers - for those chefs that really have everything!  There is a great fish counter, plenty of cheese and cold cuts.  It was good to see that they had some rare cuts of meat in the refrigerated section like goat shanks and cuts from Iberico ham (at Mitte Meer, all the meat is frozen).

Of course all this open space and handsome merchandising comes at a price.  It’s expensive.  For example a jar of Oritz Anchovies in oil is €6.69 at Mitte Meer and €8.34 at Frische Paradies so roughly 25% more expensive.  But it’s altogether more exclusive and stocks hard to find ingredients.  I will certainly be coming back but I might just check if they have what I am looking for  at Mitte Meer first.

  1. This looks too good to be true! It has been number one on my list of places I want to visit, and I think I finally have to drag my bottom over there!

Frische Paradies is wonderful. I just wanted to let you know that, at least, the store in Charlottenburg has a 15% “cash and carry” discount on the 1st Monday of the month. Good luck and try to resist buying more than you can “carry.” :)
