Christmas Eve 2010

Usually, we have Raclette on the 24th but this year I thought we should go lighter, in anticipation of what would come on the 25th.
Reading David Tanis’s A Platter of Figs and other recipes has really helped me de-clutter my dinner menus. And strive for simple and elegant as opposed to more and difficult.
Armed with my new-found simplicity mantra, I ordered a side of salmon from Macgilvray for £44 including DHL shipping! This salmon had won a Gold Great Taste Award. It lived up to the hype. It was smoky, firm and not overly salty. Rogacki is a good source for salmon in Berlin but it is very expensive (€100 / kg). I don’t even want to think what it costs at Ka De We!
To go along with the salmon, I served:
- White bean salad with fennel and orange
- Red cabbage with pear and Parmesan
- A simple green salad
- Avocado mousse and creme fraiche
- Walnut rye bread from Soluna Brot und Öl
- Red wine tarte tatin with vanilla ice cream
It all went down a storm.
Of course for the 25th, I am throwing away my “in moderation” hat for one of excess. Yeeeeee Haaaaa!
